Treatment Navigation Intensives

When you or someone you care about begins considering addiction treatment, it can quickly become difficult to know where to start. Programs vary widely in philosophy, structure, the populations they serve, and level of care, making it difficult to determine what type of support may actually be appropriate.

For some people, the challenge is not deciding whether help is needed, but understanding what kind of help will actually be the right fit.

A Treatment Navigation Intensive provides dedicated time to step back, review the situation carefully, and determine the most appropriate next step in the recovery process.

These extended sessions draw on professional experience across multiple levels of addiction treatment and provide thoughtful clinical guidance for individuals who are ready to explore help but want clarity before making treatment decisions.

When This service may be helpful

This service is often helpful when:

  • Someone recognizes they need help but is unsure where to start

  • Families feel overwhelmed by the number of addiction treatment programs available

  • Previous treatment attempts have not been successful and next steps feel unclear

  • Loved ones want to better understand levels of care before pursuing treatment

  • Individuals want guidance navigating the addiction treatment system

What Happens During a Treatment Navigation Intensive?

Treatment Navigation Intensives are structured extended sessions designed to help individuals and families understand treatment options and determine the most appropriate level of care.

Sessions typically last 2–3 hours, allowing enough time for questions to be answered and options explored thoroughly.

Topics we may explore together include:

  • Assessment of current substance use patterns

  • Review of previous treatment experiences

  • Evaluation of relapse history

  • Education about levels of care within the addiction treatment system

  • Discussion of treatment program models and recovery supports

  • Identification of practical or emotional barriers to treatment

  • Development of a treatment plan or decision pathway

Loved ones such as a partner, spouse, parent, or trusted support person may attend the session if the client wishes, though their participation is not required.

How do you know what treatment is right for you?

Choosing the right addiction treatment program can be one of the most confusing parts of beginning recovery. Options such as detox, residential treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) all provide different levels of support.

A Treatment Navigation Intensive helps individuals and families understand these differences and determine what level of care may be most appropriate for their situation.

Based on clinical history, current needs, and recovery goals, recommendations are offered regarding the level of care that may provide the most appropriate support.

Treatment Program Recommendations

When appropriate, specific treatment programs may be recommended based on clinical fit, program quality, and professional familiarity with the treatment team.

Recommendations are based on trusted professional relationships and firsthand knowledge of treatment environments. Clients are always free to choose the program they feel is the best fit for their needs.

Admissions Support

When helpful, the intensive may include assistance with practical next steps such as:

  • Contacting treatment programs

  • Coordinating admissions conversations

  • Preparing for program intake

  • Discussing the timing and logistics of entering treatment

If additional coordination is needed, support can continue through follow-up therapy sessions.

How This Service Differs From an Intervention

Treatment Navigation Intensives provide clinical consultation and guidance through the addiction treatment system, rather than confrontation or persuasion.

This service is designed for individuals who are open to exploring help but need clarity about treatment options and next steps. Recommendations are offered honestly and directly while respecting each person’s readiness and autonomy in the recovery process.

If medical detox or a higher level of care is necessary for safety, appropriate referrals will be recommended.

Follow-Up Support

After treatment decisions are made, many clients continue therapy to support the recovery process. Ongoing services may include:

  • Individual therapy before entering treatment

  • Coordination with treatment providers when appropriate

  • Therapy following completion of a treatment program

  • Support for families navigating the recovery process
